National Preparedness Month is a great time to “Start a Conversation”
September is National Preparedness Month. With increasing extreme weather, local churches can use this time to discuss how they can prepare to be places hope amid tragedy. Alongside the Red Cross and Ready.gov, UMCOR’S ‘Connecting Neighbors’ program helps congregations prepare and respond effectively to community disasters.
How partnerships make ‘Asylees Mission’ possible
In mid-May, Fairwood Community UMC began overnight housing 30 asylee guests. The mission, fueled by partnerships with El Dios Viviente and Renton UMCs, has provided crucial support, including shelter, meals, and ESL classes. Rev. Ferdie Llenado celebrates the partnership, reflects on the importance of the work, and asks how other churches might partner to welcome and serve those seeking a new life.
